Size reduction of filaments

The new one-shaft size reduction machine of type WLK-F of WEIMA Maschinenbau GmbH, Ilsfeld/Germany, permits the extremely difficult size reduction of textile filaments, small ribbons, and the like, in one step as well as the direct charging of a downstream extruder.

Long-thread textile filaments tend to wind around the rotor during size reduction and to block it. Moreover, the light weight of the material frequently leads a clogging of the screen after size reduction. The WLK-F has a patented V-rotor. In connection with an adjustable spider rail ("super-cut-system") and a special cutter geometry the V-rotor guarantees an exact cut and - in this way - prevents the filament from winding around the rotor. A screen system that has been particularly designed for light-weight and fibrous material warrants a material discharge without clogging.

The material is put into the machine through a hopper in bulk or as a complete bale, pushed against the turning rotor by means of a hydraulic and load-controlled pushing device, and reduced in size. In case of bale feeding, the previously necessary manual opening of bales or the preliminary disintegration of bales by means of guillotines is no longer required. After size reduction in the WLK-F, the material can be directly processed in a downstream extruder without further treatment. This leads to enormous reductions in time and costs.

The size reduction machine is offered with rotor widths from 600 mm to 3,000 mm and optionally with electrical or hydraulic drive from 22 kW to 2 x 110 kW drive rating. Depending on the screen hole diameter the granular material has a size from 20 to 100 mm. Depending on grain size and material (PP, PA6, PA 6.6, and others) the achievable throughput is between 300 and 3,000 kg/h. The hydraulically slewable screen cage permits a fast screen change and a simple cleaning and maintenance of the machine. Optionally, the machine is equipped with a rotor cooling to be used in case of higher external temperatures.
